Unlocking The Utica: The Next Big Northeast Shale Play?

Live Date: Live date was 7-19-11 Time: On Demand Cost: $100

The Ordovician Utica shale is an international shale play, stretching from Quebec, Canada, down in the U.S. portion of the great Appalachian Basin.  The Utica offers strong attractions: excellent rock properties, low acreage costs, and proximity to premium gas markets. This emerging play is on the cusp of exploration, with operators beginning to probe its potential in earnest. Here, in the webinar “Unlocking the Utica: The Next Big Northeast Shale Play?” you will hear the latest insights on this fascinating reservoir from two industry experts. The 55-minute webinar will include a live Q&A moderated by Peggy Williams, Director of Unconventional Resources, Hart Energy.

What You Will Learn:

  • How the Utica and equivalent shale plays relate on a regional perspective
  • How porosity types in the Utica compare to the Marcellus
  • What estimates have been made of recoverable resources in the Utica
  • Where activity is occurring, with a focus on the liquids-rich fairway in eastern Ohio

About the Speakers:

John P. Martin, Ph.D., President,  JPMartin Energy Strategy LLC, Formerly NYSERDA (retired)

Dr. John P. Martin is the founder of JPMartin Energy Strategy LLC. Prior to founding the company in 2011, he spent 17 years working on energy research and policy issues at the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) and developed a series of projects targeting oil and gas resources, renewable energy development and environmental mitigation. He has served on various state and national panels including the U.S. Department of Energy’s Unconventional Resources Technical Advisory Committee. Martin co-directed the Governor's Carbon Capture and Sequestration Working Group and was NYSERDA's point person on a series of technical studies looking at all aspects of hydraulic fracturing and multi-well pad development. In addition, he completed the initial research on the natural gas potential of New York's Utica Shale that helped stimulate significant industry investment in this resource. Prior to joining NYSERDA, he worked in academia, consulting and regional planning.

He holds a doctorate in urban and environmental studies, an master’s degree in economics and a bachelor’s of science degree in geology, all from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He also holds an master’s degree from Miami University and completed graduate work in mineral economics at West Virginia University.
